What is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization explained

GEO is the practice of making a brand easier for AI search systems and answer engines to understand, summarize and reference.

GEO means making a brand understandable to generative systems

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making a website and brand easier for AI-driven search systems to understand, summarize and reference. It does not replace SEO. It adds a new layer: entity clarity, answer quality, evidence and consistency across the web.

Traditional search often sends users to a list of pages. Generative search may answer the question directly. That changes the job of a page. It must still be crawlable, but it also needs to be extractable: clear enough that an answer system can identify the key facts without guessing.

The four foundations of GEO

  1. Entity clarity: the site makes it obvious who or what the subject is.
  2. Answer structure: pages answer direct questions with short, factual sections.
  3. Evidence: claims are backed by examples, sources, methodology or transparent limitations.
  4. Authority signals: internal links, external references, local context and schema reinforce the same topic.

What GEO is not

GEO is not a shortcut for ranking first. It is not keyword stuffing with new acronyms. It is not a guarantee that a page will appear in AI Overviews or any answer engine. A better way to think about GEO is risk reduction: reduce ambiguity, reduce unsupported claims and reduce the chance that a machine misunderstands the page.

How to start

Start by writing a two-sentence description of the brand. Then check whether the homepage, about page, structured data and contact page all support that same description. If they do not, the site has an entity clarity problem.

Next, choose the five questions the audience actually asks. Build one page for each question. Use plain headings, direct answers and evidence. Then connect those pages with internal links so the topic map is visible.
